Max Würden´s electronic ambient music is based on samples and field recordings. It´s simplified but because of the detailed and crystal-clear sounds it always remains very tasteful. Sometimes disturbing in its compositions though feeling so familiar at the same time.
Since he is a cologne-based artist and also a friend, we were quite excited to see Max Würden in the line-up of this year’s ambient festival and we can present him in „from out of sounds“. Nils Frahm is a perfectionist. So he needed all the soundcheck time he could get for making everything like he is expecting it to be. And it was worth it. In the last years he developed into a performer and in such a beautiful place as the church of St. Aposteln you can feel the energy in every note he plays and every pause he makes.
We had to wait to the middle of the night until he made this interview with us, but because he had so many interesting things to say we couldn´t care less.

This is the second video in a row starting with Kai Angermann of InsaDonjaKai playing the xylophone. But this time he accompanies Volker Bertelmann a.k.a. Hauschka (also from Düsseldorf) and it´s a beautiful summer´s day at the Brüsseler Platz in cologne in the church of St. Michael.
The place is crowded, Gonzales is in the audience, the sun shines through the windows and Hauschka´s prepared piano is echoing in the nave.
There are not many better ways to spend a sunday afternoon.
Later we talked to Hauschka about error and perfection and many other things. But even though Volker is one of the most patient, nicest and helfpful artists I met, sadly, because of technical problems (you see the irony here?) there isn´t much left of it.

Seeing a concert of the Düsseldorf based trio InsaDonjaKai is an exciting experience. You can feel the joy of them playing together and you wonder constantly what will happen next. No wonder they appear on three albums of Hauschka.
They make it look easy to master their two cellos, vibraphone and percussions, creating new sounds and improvisations and obviously surprise themselves again and again.
The big smile on their faces during the concert returned when we talked with them about how they met and what they like about the cello.

At the sounds like love festival in cologne in november 2012 „0“ (http://0sound.tumblr.com/) performed a set in their basic three-people-orchestration playing gitars, Glockenspiel and percussions.
In the crystal clear coldness in the church of St. Michael their pieces of contemporary minimal music sounded clear and beautiful and got me carried away easily.
It´s not easy to explain what 0 is, but fortunately we could ask Sylvain Chauveau for an interview. He was very willing to talk about the open concept of this collective of french and belgian musicians and todays possibilities of making music.

We met Lubomyr Melnyk right after the soundcheck before the final concert of Zivilisation der Liebe 2013 http://www.ambientfestival.de in the church of St. Aposteln in cologne. He agreed to do an interview, even though it was obvious that he wasn´t thrilled about it. So first he took some time to manage the right order of his many albums on the merchtable.
During the interview he opened his reservation quickly while he was talking about continuous music, the art of composing and playing piano, which he developed in the 70s. And he lit up when i asked him about the artists of the contemporary classic he met in Berlin, like Nils Frahm and Peter Broderick, with whom he recorded his new album Corollaries.
I thanked him for the interview and he thanked me for the questions.
Later that evening he played a wonderful concert. The piece in the end of the video is a composition for two pianos. So the other piano you can hear is a playback he had recorded earlier that day.
